Saturday of the First Week of Lent

Saint of the day

Saint Casimir (1461-1484)

A teenager leading an army? That is part of the life story of Saint Casimir. He became a conscientious objector after seeing how poorly his soldiers were treated. A serious and prayerful young man, he decided never again to be involved in war, and was punished by his father for this with three months of confinement. Though he reigned briefly as ruler of Poland, he died at the age of 23 of lung trouble. This young man is the patron saint of two countries: Poland and Lithuania. Reflection

Saint Casimir stood up for what he believed in, even though his father ridiculed him. Do you have the courage to stand up for your beliefs and for the just treatment of others, even when others may look down on you for it? Spend some time with the Lord. Ask him to give you strength and courage in difficult situations.

Prayer

God of all graces, help me, like Casimir, to have the courage to live out my convictions even when others scorn me. Help me, like this young saint, to stay close to you in prayer. (Taken from “Take Ten: Daily Bible Reflections for Teens.”)
