The Duties of a Christian to God
Among the pedagogical works of Saint John Baptist de La Salle (1651–1719), founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and patron saint of all teachers, The Duties of a Christian to God served as his catechetical text for training teachers and teaching students. As such, it is a valuable source for understanding De La Salle’s theology, spirituality, and pedagogy. It is presented here in an English translation, not to serve as a model for present-day catechisms, but as another avenue into discovering more of the spiritual and educational genius of De La Salle. It also contributes to the understanding of how De La Salle integrated the various parts of his mission to provide a Christian and human education to poor children.
The Duties of a Christian to God was translated by Brother Richard Arnandez, FSC, and edited by Alexis James Doval. It is part of the Lasallian Publications series, which produced volumes on the life, writings, and work of De La Salle and on the early history of the Brothers.
