Pictured here is the the ancient city of Assos, mentioned in Acts 20:13-16. Assos was a port city and Saint Paul only traveled to it to catch a boat to Jerusalem. It was an impressive city, especially as you approach it from the Roman Road. As you can see from the photo, Assos had a massive city wall and city gate. These are the original walls and gate-they have not been reconstructed. It is hard to tell from the photo, but the towers beside the city gate are over 40 feet high. It is amazing to think how they cut and transported the stone and hoisted them in place.
