b'FOURThe pope goes further in promoting integral ecology.Pope Francis seeks an integral ecology capable of promoting the common good and the flourishing of all lifeof humans and of other creatures. He goes further than his predecessors in promoting integral ecology, a notion that is even more inclusive than the notion of integral development first proposed by Pope Paul VI in his 1967 encyclical Populorum progressio (1421). Importantly, Pope Francis says we can no longer achieve integral human development without the simultaneous inclusion of concern for the environment in which we live. We are faced not with two separate crises, one environmental and the other social, but rather, with one complex crisis that is both social and environmental. Strategies for solution demand an integrated approach to combating poverty, restoring dignity to the excluded, and at the same time protecting nature (LS 139). 10 AspireVolume 1//Winter 2020 Subscribe today! smp.org/aspire'
